Maine Postal History

During the history of the town of Alfred, there have been three post offices.
Briefly, the history of these three is as follows:
1. Alfred post office opened on 23 February 1801 and is still in operation.
2. Gore post office opened on 29 July 1897 and closed on 31 August 1903.
3. North Alfred post office opened on 29 August 1861 and closed on 5 June 1871.

The circular postmark is 29–30 mm in diameter.

1934 April 2 through 1950 August 10:
The circular postmark is approximately 33 mm in diameter. The elliptical cancellation to the right of the circle is not a consistent distance from the circle on these covers (and on others observed), and, therefore, it is likely not part of the postmark handstamp.

The circular postmark is 30–34 mm in diameter. The four horizontal bars to the right of the circle are approximately 4 mm apart on center.
