Maine Postal History: Finding the Sources

We suggest you start with Research Resources on Maine Postal History, a five-page overview of both printed and online sources. This list was developed by the editing team for The Post Offices of Maine as we were working through updates and enhancements to the 2022 edition.

The Finding Aid for U. S. Postmaster Appointment Records 1789--present is an essential guide to and through the maze of historical records available at the National Archives website, as well as what is available at the USPS website on postmasters up to the present time. It provides specific guidance for researching appointments in Maine and the other New England states, but is useful for all states. Developed by Kelvin Kindahl, this is an essential time-saving tool for this research.

Post Route Maps of Maine 1796-1942 provides an introduction to the map publishing activities of the Post Office Department, as well as links to online repositories that have digital high-resolution copies of many editions of the Post Route Map of the State of Maine. All of the links lead to digitised high-resolution maps that are available for free download. Based on information compiled by Mike Ludeman at StampSmarter.
