Welcome to the Maine Postal History pages. Here you will find more than 400 web pages, organized town by town, showcasing the history of the post offices in the towns, cities, plantations, and unorganized townships of the State of Maine. On these pages we try to include:
  • opening dates
  • closing dates
  • postmaster appointments
along with images of
  • post offices
  • postmarks
  • covers, and
  • relevant portions of Post Route Maps.
In the interest of brevity, we use the word "town" to refer to any city, town, plantation, or unorganized township.

Our goal is to create a postal history page for each town in Maine that has, or has had, a post office in operation at any time. That would include approximately 500 towns.

Readers should be aware that it is not unusual for a town to have had more than one post office. While Big Twenty Township in Aroostook County has had only one post office, Hampden in Penobscot County has had sixteen, and Auburn in Androscoggin has had over twenty-five. Over the years there have been 3300 post offices in Maine, so that yields an average of more than six post offices per town.

A little bit of background...

These pages were originally researched, created, and hosted by V. F. Thomas Co. We are happy to have the opportunity to host and continue the development of this project on the Maine Philatelic Society website.

This project is still in a transitional phase, and some pages here might continue to show the old contact information, but V. F. Thomas asks that you use the new contact information instead:

postalhistorymaine@gmail.com.

We will be trying to update that information on each page, as well as uploading much new information. If you have information or photos to share, we hope that you'll get in touch with us at that address.

Also, we are aware of many links that are broken; we are working on fixing those.

Much of the information on these pages was based on data found in the 1995 edition of The Post Offices of Maine, A Rarity Guide. In the process of researching the 2022 edition of the book, we discovered new or corrected data that reveals the need to revise many of these pages. Jim Husson, with some help from friends, has taken on the job of revising and updating the pages. All of Androscoggin County, and most of Aroostook County have been reworked, and we hope to complete Aroostook and Cumberland by late spring 2024.

As part of the revision process, the pages are being converted to Portable Document Format (PDF), which will make it easier to print, download, and share them.

More information on the book is available at http://www.mainephilatelic.org/books/TPOOM.

We are very grateful to Al Tieman and the Waterville Stamp Club for working to ensure the continuity of this project.
